Coffee Chats - Neila Sathyalingam on Weaving Indian Dance into the Multi-Cultural Fabric of Singapore (Session 2)

Want to know how choreographers think when creating a dance piece? What challenges do these artists have? How do you run a dance company? What is dance all about? A new event at Esplanade's da:ns festival; Coffee Chats is a rare opportunity to have an intimate conversation with a dance artist or practitioner.


In this session, be in conversation with Cultural Medallion Award recipient Neila Sathyalingam on Weaving Indian Dance into the Multi-Cultural Fabric of Singapore. Come prepared for an enlightening and engaging session at Coffee Chats.

How does it work?

In each session, up to three people get 20 minutes to ask questions and dialogue with artists and practitioners. Due to the limited slots available, please be at the venue 10 minutes before the event. In the situation that you are not present, we will give your slot to another on the waiting list.

About the Conversationalist


Neila Sathyalingam is a leader in the Indian classical dance scene in Singapore. A former dance teacher at the prestigious Kalakshetra Academy in Chennai, India, she relocated to Singapore with her husband in 1974 and together they founded the Apsaras Arts music and dance academy in 1977.

From 1983, she concurrently served as resident choreographer and dance teacher with the People’s Association’s Indian Dance group for more than two decades. Today, Apsaras Arts is a leading Indian arts institution that has won acclaim for its innovative, large-scale Indian dance-dramas that have been performed in Singapore and overseas.

In 1989, Neila received the Cultural Medallion for her contributions to Indian classical dance.
